Curator’s Note
Every piece in the Stranger Folkes Archive is chosen for a reason. Some are curious, some unsettling, and others simply seem to belong somewhere beyond the ordinary.
Specimen No. A-0775 was the sort of picture Emma could not walk past.
She found it showing a lonely little cottage perched upon a darkened hill, watched over by a twisted old tree. Bats crossed the pale sky above it, while a single pumpkin rested below.
Emma stared at the tiny house for a while.
She wondered who lived there — and whether they ever left.
Naturally, she brought it back.
With its striking black and white artwork, atmospheric folklore-inspired scene and deep wood-effect frame, The Crooked Cottage has the feeling of an old illustration rescued from a forgotten storybook.
The stark monochrome scene gives it a wonderfully eerie character, while the little details the crooked cottage, bare tree, flying bats and solitary pumpkin add just enough Halloween mystery without making it feel limited to seasonal decorating.
